Watkins Maintains the Advantage - But Calvert-Lewin May Yet Secure the World Cup

Only one goal in his initial ten Premier League games this campaign had plenty of questioning whether Dominic Calvert-Lewin's peak were behind him.

But, a just four weeks afterwards, he has become the most discussed striker in England after scoring seven goals in 6 back-to-back games.

His most recent strike, in a 1-1 draw versus Sunderland, took his tally to eight, establishing him as the leading English scorer in the Premier League this term.

An Impressive Return to Form

The 28-year-old signed for Leeds United on a free transfer in the summer, following a nine-year spell with Everton that was marred by fitness issues in its final stages.

However, the numbers supporting his revival in Daniel Farke's new fast-breaking 3-5-2 formation are truly impressive.

His six-match scoring streak sees him in elite company as only the 11th English player to score in six or more straight Premier League matches.

To provide context, even England captain Harry Kane was unable to produce a run lasting this many games - his best stands at two distinct five-match runs.

And the sole English striker to outdo Calvert-Lewin in recent memory is Jamie Vardy, who went on an eight-game scoring run for Leicester City in 2019.

What's Behind the Scoring Form?

What has made Calvert-Lewin so difficult to stop in the past month? A latest opponent's manager summed it up succinctly.

Calvert-Lewin's return to form has naturally fueled discussions of an England return.

The former Sheffield United player has 11 England appearances, netting four goals, but has not featured for the Three Lions since the most recent European Championship.

Pundits think the striker will be in the mix for the World Cup squad if he can sustain this form.
