Wimbledon Embraces Video Review Technology for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in employing video review systems.

Video review systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.

Players are granted the option to challenge particular calls from the official, mirroring the system currently in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology will be operational on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step follows just a season following the All England Club implemented ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to review specific situations, such as:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Possible interference end of a rally.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a competitor can request.

Case in Point

An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another innovation at The Championships this year will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
